Reading Slump Tips

Here are some tips to revive your reading flow after a slump:

First, give yourself grace. It is entirely normal not to want to read for a while. Do not allow a pity party to reside in your mind because you do not want to read. Rest comes in many forms. Sometimes a lack of desire to do something you love, like reading, is a sign you need more rest.

Second, do not compare yourself to anyone that is reading. Mark Twain said it best, “comparison is the thief of joy.” Celebrate your reading sabbatical, and do not concern yourself with anyone else’s reading journey.

Third, remember reading is not meant to be a chore. Yes, this is true even if you’re in a book club. Reading for leisure should be enjoyable. If you are not feeling the usual joy of picking up a book, do something else with your allotted reading time that does bring your joy.

Fourth, see what is trending or what made the recent bestsellers list. You are bound to find something that excites you to want to read again.

Fifth, read something different than you're accustomed to. If you enjoy sci-fi, try a Rom-Com or a memoir instead.

I’ve used all of these tips personally, and specifically in the above-listed order.

I hope you find these tips helpful. Let me know if you try any or what tips you like to use when in a reading slump. Message us here at hello@knitandlit.com or send us a message on Instagram.
